Black Friday originates from the United States and traditionally refers to the Friday after Thanksgiving. It is often a day people take off, commonly used for Christmas shopping, and retailers support it with promotions both online and in physical stores.
There are several explanations for the origin of the term Black Friday. One theory says the crowds in shopping streets on that day resemble the chaos following the stock market crash of 1929. As the start of the holiday shopping season, city centres are packed and streets often jammed with traffic. Another theory suggests that retailers are able to “get back in the black” on this day, earning profitable numbers—and even ending up with “black hands” from counting money. No one really knows which explanation is correct. The good news is that Black Friday now largely happens online, so you can do your shopping in a relaxed way.
Black Friday 2025 takes place on November 28. It always falls on the fourth Friday of November. Traditionally, this day has been celebrated in the U.S. since the 1960s, the day after Thanksgiving.
